How does your garden grow? We grew nearly 1500kg of vegetables in our gardens in 2011. Below is a description of our 3 main garden sites:
The Edible Campus Santropol Roulant's Edible Campus garden is run in partnership with Alternatives' Rooftop Garden Project and the McGill School of Architecture's Minimum Cost Housing Group. We grow mostly vegetables in over 275 containers, using a self-watering technique. Over the past few years, we expanded the garden by converting a series of ornamental rock bed into raised beds for productive planting. For information on our innovative gardening techniques, please visit rooftopgardens.ca. For more information on our partners, please visit their respective websites.
Rooftop Garden at 111 Roy Our new building at 111 Roy Street East serves as a demonstration site, with 5 types of urban agriculture on display: a 1500 sq ft greenroof for row gardening, 50+ self-watering containers, a small greenhouse, vertical plants such as grapes and hops, and 2 hives as part of our urban apiculture project.
The Senneville Farm Site This summer Santropol Roulant will seek to augment its work in food security and urban agriculture by cultivating a small piece of land in Montreal's West Island. Over and above the primary goal of producing fresh vegetables for the Roulant's various programs (Meals-On-Wheels, Fresh Basket, and Neighborhood Markets) the project also features a strong public educational stream. Most notably, the project will reconnect urbanites with the sources of their food and increase public awareness of the importance of protecting the last remaining pieces of peri-urban farm land on the island. What to expect as a volunteer? We garden collectively tackling various tasks, as laid out by the garden coordinator. The entirety of the harvest is then returned to Santropol Roulant's meals-on-wheels kitchen, CSA basket program, and seasonal markets in select neighborhoods. Depending on the time of season and the number of volunteers, the workload goes from super busy to super chill. So you might spend one shift bent over harvesting tomatoes non-stop for 3 hours and the next shift leisurely watering the plants while chatting with a friend. Gardening volunteer shifts : Tuesday 10:30-12:30pm Wednesday 4-6pm Friday 10:30-12:30pm Please sign up before coming to the garden! You can drop by at our office (111 Roy Est) or call us (514-284-9335) to sign up. Garden shifts are cancelled in case of storm or heavy rain! For pictures from our garden, please visit our flickr site. Where to find us? The Edible Campus Garden is situated on McGill University's downtown campus (805 Sherbrooke St. W.), in front of Burnside Hall. Google Maps Link Our rooftop garden sits atop our new building at 111 Roy Street East. What to bring? Dress appropriately. You might very well get dirty. Bring a hat and sunscreen for the sun, gloves if you have some, and a water bottle in case you get thirsty. Other than that, a positive attitude is all you need. Here are a few things we always need in the garden, if you happen to have them lying around the house, then by all means please bring them over: Horticultural Workshops: These workshop are designed to teach you the basics of organic gardening and then some!
