Portes ouvertes, rue Fermier: Roy St closed for Santropol Roulant’s annual culinary competition

MONTREAL, July 24th, 2014 – The countdown has begun! Santropol Roulant’s most important annual event will be getting a facelift this year with Portes ouvertes, rue Fermier, an evening tobe filled with festivities. The event will take place on July 31st starting at 5 p.m., in front of Santropol Roulant, at 111 Roy St. East.

In a show of support for the organization, the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough has offered to close Roy St. off to traffic between Coloniale and Bullion, clearing the way for an event of unprecedented proportions.

People, Food, Community

Santropol Roulant’s doors have never been so widely open than for the celebration and presentation of programs by this integral part of the Plateau-Mont-Royal, which has built this mid-summer meet to connect folks to the source of their food.

Newly-inaugurated Executive Director Pier Liné invites Montrealers with open arms: “We are inviting all Montrealers to the event next Thursday with the intent of measuring the immense joint power of food, in a wonderful ambiance of summer celebrations!”

A Flavourful Agenda

The evening will be divided into three parts: first, accomplished chefs will visit the site for a deliciously friendly “Iron Chef”-style culinary competition. This year, the formula for the competition has been reviewed and improved in order to satisfy the public’s palette: Aux vivres, Fabergé, Laïka and Panthère Verte, all local restaurants, as well as Chef Stephanie Audet, will go head-to-head at 7 o’clock to compete for the Audience Award.

“Santropol Roulant’s annual “Iron Chef” competition, this year under the banner of Portes ouvertes, rue Fermier, reflects, in my eyes, acts of community, sharing and freshness, three Roulant values that speak to me particularly. I would not miss this evening for the world!” says Chef Audet, a rising star in the world of vegan and raw cuisine.

Along with the competition, Santropol Roulant will offer a handful of free and highly participatory workshops on the themes of agriculture, urban beekeeping, gardening and the harvest of urban fruits, bicycle repairs, the cultivation of mushrooms, food processing and vermicomposting. Those curious and thirsty for knowledge will have the chance to learn more on various subjects related to food safety in Montreal.

The evening will wrap up to the festive sounds of Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra and a chance for all to show their skills on the dance floor—overall, summertime festivities that are more than likely to attract food lovers of all sizes!
