Come one, come all to Santropol Roulant’s Annual Seedling Sale! On Saturday, June 1st, from 11-5pm, we will be selling the extra seedlings from our greenhouses, all of which have been grown from organic seeds and using organic methods. Perfect for getting your garden off to a good start. All proceeds go to Santropol Roulant’s urban and peri-urban agriculture programs. Here’s a short list of what we expect to have for sale:

-tomatoes
-eggplants
-peppers
-basil
-parsley
-lettuce
-shallots
-ground cherry
-cucumbers
-summer and winter squash
-and more!!

3.50$ per seedling (minus a few exceptions) or 3 for 10$

Most seedlings have been potted up to 3 1/2 inch pots. If you would like to reserve your plants in advance, please email tim@santropolroulant.org

Mini-internship in food transformation

We’re looking for a kitchen devotee to join our kitchen team for the summer, 5 hours per week. The goal of the position is to transform fruits and vegetables to create added value products for sale in our markets or to add to meals-on-wheels

Kitchen Workshop: Fresh Pasta Making

At the Roulant, we’re huge fans of the Foodie Collective, a group of adventurous, competitive, and food adoring individuals who have been known to transform everyday ingredients into extraordinary dishes.

On May 30th, Foodie Collective members Katherine MacNaughton and Amanda Piedimonte will be in our very own kitchen leading a workshop on homemade pasta carbonara. Learn how to make pasta dough from scratch, roll it into tagliatelle, create a carbonara dish, and enjoy with a lovely wine pairing in good company!

Places are limited, so secure your spot by purchasing your tickets online. If you’ve seen (or tasted) any of the Foodie Collective’s creations, you’ll know you shouldn’t miss this event for the World.

Bike-Shop Administration Summer Internship – Job posting

Santrovelo is seeking a Bike-Shop Administration Intern for the duration of the summer (11 weeks). Santrovélo is a friendly, vibrant and stimulating environment, led by a wonderfull team of volunteers who are an integral part of Santropol Roulant as a whole.
This is an administrative position geared (pun intended) towards amateur bicycle enthusiasts. A profound knowledge of bike mechanics is not required.
What is required is a dose of enthusiasm, organizationnal skills, interest in the functioning of a volunteer collective and a knack for administrative tasks.

Froot Cup 2013

After the success of last summer’s tournament, the Froot Cup returns for the second year, with a one day, co-ed soccer Tournament. This year 15 teams will compete but only one will claim the coveted Froot Cup!

When: Sunday, June 16th 2013, 10am-5pm
Where: Concordia Stadium, 7200 Sherbrooke St. W, Montreal
Cost: $250 for community teams

This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. We’ve got some amazing companies sponsoring teams, and now we’re calling out to you, our member of the community, to help us out and put your team together!

The minimum contribution to register a team is $250 for community teams ($25 per person for a team of 10). We encourage you however to get out and about as an ambassador of the Roulant. If you like, host a barbeque, ask your favorite local businesses for sponsorship, use your networks and get creative to help us raise the funds we need to continue our programs throughout the year.

There will be prizes for best costumes, best cheer, best team spirit and ONE GRAND PRIZE for the most money raised!

Teams should be 10 to 12 people. Keep in mind that we’ll play 7 vs. 7 width wise on the field and each team needs a minimum of two female players on the field.

Games are 25 minutes each. We start the round robin at 10 am and the finals will be played at 3:30pm.

This fun-in-the-sun day just happens to fall on Father’s Day this year. Bring your Dad, bring your kids, bring the whole family. There will be sideline activities for everyone!

Do your work colleagues play soccer too? We’re still on the lookout for corporate sponsors. Give Meghan a call at 514-284-2771 to help make this another successful fundraiser for the Roulant!

Whose meal is it anyways?

Come join us for an evening of laughter as the fine folks from Montreal Improv perform a long-form improvisational comedy show in support of Santropol Roulant; you’ll be in stitches.

When: Sat, April 20th, 2013. Doors open at 7:30pm, show runs from 8 to 9:30pm
Where: 111 Roy East, corner Coloniale, 2nd floor
How much: Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here. Cheap drinks available.

At intermission, we’ll be raffling off some sweet prizes including a free class at Montreal Improv! For more information, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Ben at 514-284-9335 or by email.

This event will be an English-language performance (but tell us how much you love it and we’ll work on hosting it in French later this spring).

The SR Fresh Basket is Back!

Sign up now for a summer of local and organic produce from our very own peri-urban farm in Senneville. The SR Fresh Produce Basket follows many of the principles of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Members are asked to pay in advance for the season, thus sharing both in the risks and rewards that occur naturally in agriculture. In exchange, we commit to growing a diversity of vegetables without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.

The Roulant’s Annual General Meeting… success and smiles

On March 28 our offices were completely, and stunningly, transformed in order to comfortably welcome the 100+ members who attended our 2013 Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM is a unique and important opportunity for Roulant staff to share 2012 programming, governance and financial highlights with our membership.

The evening was filled with presentations, food, dialogue, and even a sneak peek or two about what is to come this year and in future years. The discussions were excellent and necessary fodder for the second part of the evening as we made the difficult decision about whom to elect to the Roulant’s Board.

Choosing among the 10 (!) candidates was no easy matter, and we’re extremely grateful to everyone who threw their hat into the ring.

It is therefore with great pride that we congratulate Ghalia Chahine, Vani Jain, Wayne McIntyre, Alex Nataros, François Pesant, and Joelle Vincent on being elected to our Board of Directors for a two year term. Along with Anne Delorme, client and community organizer Chris Kennedy, and David McNeil. Our new Board members will provide leadership, direction and oversight to our work in the coming years as together we nourish community and support the work and membership of Santropol Roulant.

Thank you to everyone who came out and contributed to the evening’s vibrancy and success. We’re truly lucky to have an engaged and engaging membership that continually pushes the Roulant to improve our work and increase our impact. Our successful AGM is just one example, albeit a very strong one, of the wonderful work Santropol Roulant members do all year long. Thanks again!

Sprouts and Indoor Greens Workshop!

With spring slowly rolling in, now is the time to learn how to start your own indoor greens and sprouts! Caution: you might fall in love with them while waiting for your lettuces to grow in the garden. Fresh, ultra-local, tasty, nutritious and cheap, homemade sprouts come with countless benefits and this workshop will help you demystify their growing.

Open to everyone, this workshop will provide you with an easy step-by-step process, some tips and tricks and will allow you to taste a variety of home-made greens and sprouts! Some ideas on how to use them in the kitchen will also be presented.
