We recently had the opportunity to host Myriam Fimbry, a journalist from Radio-Canada’s Desautels le dimanche, at the Roulant. Myriam interviewed Halia Flores, Lola Montes and Andrea Strom-Rancourt, three of our Meals-on-Wheels volunteers, about their involvement in our Volunteer Program. In particular, the radio piece focused on how newcomers use volunteering as a way to integrate into their new home and connect with the local community.
We are thrilled that our volunteers have been highlighted in such a way, and want to share a bit about them and what they do here each week. Halia began volunteering with us in April 2015, Lola in Sept 2015, and Andrea in Dec 2013. Over the course of the past year or so, all three have been helping out regularly in the kitchen, and have helped create a welcoming atmosphere each week. In addition, Lola has helped us with meal deliveries and Andrea at special events.
We strive to make the Roulant a socially inclusive place where all are welcome to participate, regardless of nationality, language, age, gender, sexual orientation, degree of mobility, and so on. If we can create an environment where all feel welcome and can participate and contribute in some way, then we will have succeeded in our efforts.
You can hear the entire radio piece here on the Radio-Canada website. For more information about volunteering opportunities at the Roulant, please check out the volunteering section on our website. You can also contact Ben, our Volunteer program Coordinator, by email or at 514-284-9335.
