Abby, Food Transformation Volunteer
I grew up in New Brunswick and moved to Montreal last year to go to Concordia University, where I study English Literature and Women’s Studies. I signed up to volunteer with Santropol Roulant at a club fair and started to volunteer regularly with the Food Transformation Program. In this program, we create beautiful products with food grown at Santropol Roulant. It is very satisfying to see the products come together and sold on the shelves of the General Store.
As a student, it can be challenging to remind myself that school isn’t always the most important thing in my life. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut where all I am focusing on is my school work, but it’s important to find a balance with other activities. At Santropol Roulant, there is a very nice sense of community, and it is great to be involved in something that is separate from school.
In my spare time, I also enjoy cooking and reading. I am involved with a few other organizations, including Best Buddies, a program that aims to make schools and communities more inclusive of people with disabilities. To anyone entering university this fall, I would say “don’t be afraid to try new things.” It’s important to test the waters and see how you like different things.
About the blog series
Santropol Roulant is a beautiful community of members brought together by food and community engagement. In an effort to capture the diversity of our members, we are launching Stories of Santropol Roulant. One of our volunteers, Monica (pictured below), is setting out to photograph our members and collect quotes and short stories to share on our blog and social media. If you see Monica at Santropol Roulant with a camera in hand, feel free to approach her and say hello. We would love to hear your story! Contact brooke@santropolroulant.org if you have any questions or would like to be interviewed.
