Yesterday, we were happy to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons.
In the evening, we had the pleasure of receiving a letter from Hélène Laverdière, MP and NDP representative of Laurier-Sainte-Marie.
The publication of her letter below is meant to be non-partisan. If we share it with you today, it is to celebrate a choice of words that we find very clear, fair and positive with respect not only to the important contribution of elders to our society, but also with respect to the challenges faced by too many of our elders as they seek to live with dignity and in good health.
To frame the letter, we offer these facts:
- In the province of Quebec, nearly 1 in 6 people is 65+ years-old.
- In Montreal, 36% of seniors live alone
- Also in Montreal, 28% of seniors live below the low income threshold (statistics in French).
- For seniors who live alone, being below this threshold represents covering all their living expenses with a maximum of approximately $1,400 per month.
Happy reading!
