Stories of Santropol Roulant – Jan

Stories

Jan, Meals on Wheels Delivery Volunteer

I started delivering meals last February and have been doing so every Saturday since. I was out for a walk in the area and was intrigued by the colourful building on the corner of Roy and Coloniale. I went inside and spoke with Ben, Santropol Roulant’s volunteer coordinator who helped me sign up to deliver meals.

Delivering meals is a great break from studying and helps to relieve the stress of school. I am currently an Economics and Geography student at McGill University, and am interested in economic development and urban studies. Specifically, I am interested in making cities more livable. For me, a livable city is one that draws people into the streets and has a sense of community.

I am from a lot of different places: I was born in the Philippines but have lived in Calgary, England, the United States, and Singapore. As a child, it was difficult to move around a lot but now that I have grown up, I appreciate it more. It taught me how to adapt to situations very quickly and I learned to love wherever I lived. I would love to go back to my home in Washington State and revisit many of my childhood friends and all the places I remember fondly.

About the blog series

Santropol Roulant is a beautiful community of members brought together by food and community engagement. In an effort to capture the diversity of our members, we are launching Stories of Santropol Roulant. One of our volunteers, Monica (pictured below), is setting out to photograph our members and collect quotes and short stories to share on our blog and social media. If you see Monica at Santropol Roulant with a camera in hand, feel free to approach her and say hello. We would love to hear your story! Contact brooke@santropolroulant.org if you have any questions or would like to be interviewed.
