Following the initiative of community groups in Shawinigan, we invite you to join the “Le Communautaire à Boutte” strike, which will take place from March 23rd to April 2nd. The aim of this service strike is to put pressure on the provincial government to:
- recognise the fundamental role of community services within Quebec’s social services sector
- provide sufficient funding to ensure the provision of services by community organisations
- ensure adequate funding to enable community organisations to offer good working conditions for essential workers in the sector
These demands are directly in line with the values that drive Santropol Roulant: mutual aid, solidarity and social justice. The strike action will culminate in a demonstration in Quebec City on Thursday April 2nd.
Underfunding and cuts to public services are having a direct impact on community services, which are seeing demand skyrocket and their services overwhelmed, without receiving any additional government support for their work. In short, the community sector is at its breaking point, lacking the resources to fulfil its essential role or to provide reasonable working conditions.
The community sector needs support from the public to make decision makers aware of its importance, and to ensure the needs of the community sector are taken into account in future policy decisions in Quebec.
Join the movement, sign the petition, and put pressure on your elected representatives now and in the lead-up to the autumn elections!
Let’s make it loud and clear that we want funding that meets the needs of the community sector: essential resources within Quebec’s social safety net.
Here are the 5 initiatives the Roulant has planned during this period to join the movement:
- Circulate the petition from the “Le Communautaire à Boutte” movement (online and in person);
- Provide visibility for the movement within our community (online, in public spaces, and at the AGM);
- Participate in local activities in the Plateau on the afternoon of March 25th;
- Grant time off and pay staff who wish to attend the demonstration in Quebec City on Thursday April 2nd;
Circulate the pre-budget report “Les popotes: un levier stratégique au soutien à domicile”, which we helped draft last month. This report more specifically outlines what is meant by adequate funding, and the fundamental role our missions play within society.
