Why the Friday Hang?
Urban agriculture at Santropol Roulant is not exempt from contributing to eco-gentrification* in the neighbourhood, quite the contrary. Ever since the arrival of the rooftop garden in 2011 (seen exclusively from the new condos), and since the recent development of Terrasses Roy, the hidden impact of these developments has given us food for thought. This is how the Kiosque Alimentaire / Friday Hang was born in 2023: an approach that invites and includes rather than excludes.
The overarching goal of the events is to create a better social mix by being more inclusive to people of all socio-economic statuses and situations in our backyard. Above all, it is an invitation to a friendly, inclusive, and intergenerational space.
*Eco-gentrification: greening interventions in lower-income neighbourhoods, which lead to social demographic changes, including the displacement or social exclusion of lower-income people. (according to the Institut National de Santé Publique du Québec)

How to participate?
There are many ways to get involved! You can take part through any combination of these things:
- Come and hang out. We strive for the Terrasses Roy to be full of life, plants and activities that bring people together and create a welcoming community.
- Check out the services on offer, from the free homemade soup to the vegetable kiosk, featuring local veggies from the Roulant Farm and more.
- Drop in to garden with us, whether for a couple minutes or a couple hours. Anyone can join us in caring for this space and learning about the plants and vegetables grown there. No experience required!
- Sign up for a volunteer shift either in the gardens or to help with the soup service by calling 514-284-9335, or signing up as new volunteer below.
- Spread the word to those who might benefit from the services on offer, or appreciate hanging out.
