Gardening Workshop Series

Community Workshops

Gardening gives us the chance to engage with our surroundings, our friends, family, and neighbours. It can deepen our appreciation for the farmers that grow our food and it can be really satisfying! It can also be quite daunting. There’s so much to know and we don’t always feel up to the task of mastering that knowledge.

No need to fear! This year the Roulant’s agriculture team is building a cohesive series of workshops that will empower the amateur gardener and enlighten the more experienced growers among you.

We’ve come up with an outline for the season (with a few more surprises to be come!):

Early May Gardening 101: Get Your Grow On

This workshop will explain how to set up your garden for the season. Topics will include choosing your site, how to prepare your beds or bins, how to transplant seedlings, how to take care of plants early in the season.

Late May Gardening 101: Keep it Growing

This workshop will be the continuation of “Get Your Grow On” and will explain how to maintain your garden once it has been established, how to fertilize your plants, how to fight off pests, and how to harvest.

Early June Gardeners and Bees Unite!

Brought to you by the Roulant’s Beekeeping Collective this workshop will get in to the nitty gritty of beekeeping in the city and will give participants the tools to support pollinators with their garden.

Late June Special Topic

The speaker is yet to be confirmed, stay tuned for more details.

Mushroom Appreciation

A brief introduction to identification of mushrooms local to the Montreal region with the possibility of a reprise of last year`s hit musical workshop “The Sex Life of Fungi”

Early September Save yOur Seeds

Hosted by the an expert seed saver, Daniel Brisebois from La Ferme Tourne-sol, participants will learn how to save seed from their prized crops for next year’s season.

Most of these workshops will be facilitated by Santropol Roulant staff members and will be offered at $15 or pay what you can (no one turned away). For the workshops facilitated by external experts the suggested cost will be $25  (no one turned away).

For more information on the workshops make sure you’re signed up to the newsletter, we’ll be sending out the precise dates and time closer to the events.
