Join us for the second annual Récits du Roulant: a storytelling event! Don’t miss this opportunity to be swept into stories from an exciting variety of close friends of the Roulant. You’ll have a taste of the community’s past, insights into what’s new in our work in food systems and social inclusion, and an appreciation for how all of this is made possible thanks to community members like you. Learn more and RSVP below.
What: Stories of the Roulant! Our four headlining storytellers include Caitlin Murphy, host of the podcast You May Be Feeling and dedicated volunteer in the kitchen; Gab Cervera, volunteer and former Meals-on-Wheels Outreach Coordinator; Mélanie Villeneuve, weekly meal delivery volunteer and passionate actor in seniors care; and Ghalia Chahine, agriculture expert and former Santropol Roulant board member.
In addition to stories from four special guests, an open-mic portion of the evening will offer an opportunity for you to share a short story. It can be about whatever you’d like, so long as it’s relevant to the Roulant and it’s under five minutes long!
Frankie, one of the farm hands, will be leading us through the evening as MC. Maya, one of the community cooks, will be lovingly preparing an apéro of refreshments for you to enjoy while taking in the stories.
Why: To celebrate the past 29 years of transformative work with people and plants at Santropol Roulant, and to highlight how your support has made it possible.
When: Thursday, September 26. Doors open at 17:00, storytelling and snacks from 17:30-19:30 (be sure to be on time so as to not disrupt the storytellers)
Where: Santropol Roulant (111 rue Roy E) – the second floor
Cost: Free, but for planning purposes we encourage you and your friends to RSVP at the link below
Is RSVPing mandatory? No, but it helps us with the event’s logistics.
Accessibility: The event will be bilingual, with a mix of some stories told in French and some in English. The second floor of the Roulant is accessible by elevator, with an accessible washroom on the main floor.
Wondering what kind of story to share during the open mic? Any ties that you have to the community are welcome, and anything that you are inspired to share and that you believe to be connected to Santropol Roulant is something that we would love to hear. There are just a few simple ground rules:
- The story has to be five minutes or shorter
- No caricaturing or explaining a culture that isn’t your own (e.g., no fake accents or explaining the customs of a community that you don’t belong to)
- No celebrating unwanted sexual advances
- No racial slurs or hate speech
- If you choose to include another person’s race, orientation, physical appearance, or able-bodiedness, be sure that it is intrinsic to the story
We can’t wait to see you there, to laugh with you, to hear from you, to eat tasty snacks with you! Feel free to contact Clare by email or at (514) 284-9335 with any questions, or to request a whisper translator.
