Intergenerational Gardening Project

Agriculture, Meals-on-Wheels, Volunteering - Personal

The Roulant’s gardens have expanded beyond our 3 gardening sites and can be found in some of our meals-on-wheels clients’s homes (since 2013)!

The Intergenerational Gardening Project was started 2 years ago by 4 Katimavik interns, including Claudia Atomei and Tassia Camoes Araujo, two close Roulant friends, volunteers and past staff members, .

The project offers gardening opportunities to meals-on-wheels clients in their homes by providing all necessary materials (containers, soil, seedlings) and a volunteer to help them maintain their garden throughout the season.

This weekly gardening opportunity is also a friendly visit which is much appreciated by both clients and volunteers. The purpose of the visit varies and might include little extra help with this or that, an opportunity to chat and move around, and a chance to share gardening skills and knowledge.

This season, we’re pleased to have 11 meals-on-wheels clients and 13 volunteers participating, and some delicious veggies harvested already! Lettuce, kale, herbs and flowers are a hit in the clients’ gardens so far, despite the visit of some unwanted visitors…squirrels!

The project is in its third year and we’re very happy to see how it’s growing and evolving, thanks to all the participating clients and volunteers.

We hope there will be many more years of intergenerational gardening to come!

Pictures coming soon!
