About the Position

The Kitchen Manager plays a pivotal role in shaping and supporting our kitchen programs at the Roulant, with a particular focus on our meals on wheels service. The Kitchen Manager will oversee all regular kitchen services, maintain service quality and lead the team of kitchen staff in delivering a continuum of food service for our community in meal specialization, food conservation and education.

Key Responsibilities

Health and Safety 

Implement and maintain excellent health and safety conditions in the kitchen, including certification, training and communications strategies for staff, volunteers and other community members pertaining to health and safety.

Daily Operations Management 

Oversee the kitchen budgets and kitchen stock, including food and packaging materials, and explore ways to improve quality and reduce costs of meal inputs. Leading the creation of the yearly client meal calendar, integrating our home grown vegetable produce into our food services and meal planning for our in-house intergenerational events.

Team Management 

Leading and organizing service provision in collaboration with our part-time kitchen staff and daily teams of volunteers for our meals on wheels service as well as for our other food-related services such as catering for internal events, food conservation, frozen meals and kitchen workshops.

Volunteers and  Accessibility 

Create a welcoming physical environment in the kitchen for volunteers with a variety of abilities and skill levels, including purchasing of new materials when required, improving the accessibility and function of the kitchen space. Support the kitchen team by developing skills and abilities, providing training to staff, interns and volunteers and enabling them to take more leadership in daily food preparation shifts.

Service and Quality Assurance 

Ensure high standards of service quality, integrating client feedback and best practice to respond to the special food needs of seniors and those experiencing a loss of autonomy in Santropol Roulant’s client community. Explore alternatives and implement them to increase our impact on food security and social inclusion in collaboration with the administration and other programs. Aligning our program outputs to our mission and values.

We are looking for candidates with the following interests, skills and experience

  • An interest and enthusiasm for working in a community organization committed to social inclusion
  • 1-2 years’ experience managing and leading in a commercial kitchen or food services project
  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets and project timelines
  • Experience working with volunteers and vulnerable populations and in particular with seniors 
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Fluency in French and English
  • Attention to detail and an excellent sense of organization
  • A valid driver’s licence is an important asset
  • Experience working in non-profit and sustainability an asset

Contract Details

This is a permanent, full-time position 40 hours/week and a forecasted start of early March 2020. This is a salaried position pays $35,000 per year and includes sick and personal days as well as small quarterly wellness benefit. Please note that the schedule of the Roulant requires staff to work in rotations for weekends and holidays. This job may require lifting loads of 25 lbs, regularly as well as moving stock up and down stairs, standing, crouching and bending.
