A Supercharged Meals-on-Wheels

Meals-on-Wheels, Staff

6 people are lining up with items used for volunteer shifts

So much has happened in the last six months, both in the world around us and at Santropol Roulant. Yet, things are still rolling full speed at the Rouant, thanks to the incredible work of volunteers and staff, nourishing vulnerable and isolated Montrealers.

Thank you!

In March, the entire Roulant community mobilized unlike ever before to ensure the safe continuity of our Meals-on-Wheels service. We want to send an enormous thank you to all the staff and volunteers who rolled up their sleeves, washed their hands, put on their masks and set to work keeping this program afloat! And a big thank you to our clients for your ongoing confidence.

Who is the Meals-on-Wheels team now?

Working with Ellen, the Volunteer Coordinator, are Fiona and James, our Volunteer Dispatcher duo. These two are your go-to-people for becoming a volunteer, checking your schedule or signing up for a shift. As a past volunteer, Fiona brings with her a great love for the community and our work. James offers his previous volunteer engagement experience from the political sphere and a passion for community activism.

The Client program welcomes Gab as the new MoW Outreach Worker. Gab was also a dedicated volunteer for the Meals-on-Wheels since last October, and has much experience working in the Plateau community sector with food security organizations. Alongside longtime Client Coordinator, Jean-François, these two are working hard to support the needs of our beloved clients.

Upon returning from her maternity leave in June, Brooke joined the Meals-on-Wheels team to bring a strategic perspective, improve our day-to-day processes and systems, and move key projects ahead.

Don’t hesitate to say hi to any of these fine (masked) folks when you give us a call or come by for your volunteer shift!

Caring for you – our volunteers and clients

As always, volunteers are the backbone of this work – growing fresh produce, preparing the daily meals, and delivering them to our clients – all while staying 2 meters apart.

While maybe it’s not as cozy as it was before, sitting on the blue couches eating cake before a delivery shift, this work is as important as ever! Between March and August 2020, 13 881 meals were delivered by volunteers. We are still serving an average of 110 meals each day to 180 clients throughout Montreal. However, for the time being, we are not adding new clients to our routes.

Caring over the phone

Because many of our clients are more vulnerable to COVID, it is hard to check in on them while delivering meals. This is why volunteers are still doing regular Client Caring Calls to check in with those most isolated during this time.

What can you do?

We still need all the help we can get! If you have time and energy to give in the kitchen or on delivery routes, please give us a call to sign up. Find out more about becoming a volunteer here.

If volunteering is not your thing right now, a financial donation is also a great way to help ensure our services continue. Every dollar counts, and donations over $10 get you a charitable tax receipt.

Finally, sending words of encouragement to the team and volunteers is always appreciated, so please don’t hesitate to reach out via email, phone or comment on our website.
