From the Roof to the Sidewalk – A Growing Installation at the Roulant

Agriculture, Community Workshops, Urban Agriculture, Volunteering - Personal

Hello handypersons!

‘From our front door to the sidewalk’, is a new summer project to extend the Roulant and its roof garden beyond the building into the 2 parking spots out front. This timing coincides with an opportune invitation from the city to create a green space on Roy.

Invitation:

Makers – we need you!  Experienced carpenters and gardeners are welcome as is anyone eager to learn and contribute. On Tuesday, June 28th at 6:30pm – we will be meeting to discuss the details and combine our resources and know-how to prepare for the collaborative construction of this new growing space.

Ramona Benveniste, long-time volunteer at the Roulant, artist and citizen participation facilitator, will welcome volunteers and support their involvement.  We’ve included Ramona’s sketches, these were submitted to the Plateau-Mont-Royal to obtain authorization. They are our starting point; we are also eager to hear your ideas.

On July 9th construction will start. The city is contributing the wooden platforms for us to begin on, and without big announcement, the project is already seeding, as grass on the roof for possibly a future hill, or in the transformation of logs from our newly cut wood on the farm into stools and table bases.

The goal is to highlight, upcycle, innovate and transform, combining our expertise in building and growing, using plants, smart pots, moss, clay, inner tubes and our new wood supplies. Neighbours are free to join and contribute to these resources!

Expect a series of outdoor workshops in the weeks to come. Should you wish to be notified, please send Ramona an email.

The deliverable is the process itself: though the outcome is unknown, we are excited to bring together our community and growing materials to see what arises.
