Volunteering at the Roulant Farm

Featured, Senneville Farm, Volunteering - Personal

It’s official: spring is back, and so are agricultural volunteer shifts at the Roulant!

As part of the Roulant’s mission of creating a more inclusive and just food system, we call on volunteers to help cultivate the Ferme du Roulant‘s 3-acre plot of agriculturally zoned and organically certified land in Senneville. This will be the first season in which the new accessible agroeducational centre infrastructure is in use, once it is completed in June, making volunteer shifts even more accessible for people with varying levels of mobility. Stay tuned for more details about the official inauguration to come!

To kick off the agricultural season, we’re organizing a bilingual volunteer information session on Monday, April 20th at 11am with a special focus on the agricultural programs. Sign up here.

You can find information about volunteering in the urban gardens here.

Shift schedule

This year we will return to regular volunteer shift scheduling at the farm, with two shifts a week scheduled on Tuesdays and Fridays. Shifts begin the week of May 4th with the first shift on Tuesday, May 5th.

Volunteer shifts are from 8:15 AM to noon, with the option of sticking around for lunch with the team. There is an option to carpool from the Roulant at 7:00 AM (see details below).

How to sign up

If you are already a Roulant volunteer, call us at 514-284-9335 to sign up for a shift or text the farm Manager Adrienne at the farm at 438-543-9948. Not a Roulant volunteer yet? Click here to sign up for a welcome session any time and become a volunteer.

Getting to the farm

There are a number of ways to get to the Roulant farm, including by carpooling from the Roulant’s downtown location at 111 rue Roy E at 7:00 AM on the day of the farm shifts. Click here to sign up to carpool to the farm as a driver or passenger or find your own way via the directions below.

What to bring

  • Appropriate clothing: hat, good boots or shoes, rain gear if necessary, etc.,
  • Water bottle and snacks,
  • A lunch if you want to stay and eat with the team.

What to expect

  • In the spring, work on the farm is quite physical and includes preparing the soil, planting seedlings, spreading seed and installing infrastructure.
  • We can always accommodate you according to your needs and capacities. If possible, let us know in advance if you have any specific accessibility requirements.

Accessibility

  • The ground at the farm is quite uneven and bumpy, and the paths are not accessible for walkers or wheelchairs.
  • We have areas that are shaded or covered from the weather.
  • There is a building with running water, a kitchenette and accessible bathrooms on site.
  • If you have specific mobility or accessibility needs, please reach out to us!
